The Borraco River is a stream that originates from two distinct springs fed by groundwater sources located about 300 meters from the sea. Its peculiarity lies in the dual spring, which causes the stream to take the shape of a “Y”. <\/p>\n\n
In ancient times, the river was 2 km long and originated near the current Provincial Road 141, where the canal eroded by the waters in the past is still visible. <\/p>\n\n
Unfortunately, the poorly considered planning of the road axis at that time caused many damages, including the diversion of rivers and streams, as well as the closure of certain springs in many areas of the Taranto region. <\/p>\n\n
The mouth of the Borraco River is a popular destination for many bathers due to its extraordinary crystal-clear water, which maintains a temperature between 9 and 10\u00b0C in winter and between 12 and 15\u00b0C in summer. <\/p>\n\n
Its waters “nourish” the fields all around. <\/p>\n\n
500 meters from the mouth of the Borraco River stands the fortress of the same name: Torre Borraco, a watchtower built during the time of Turkish raids. It is characterized by a single room with a barrel vault and was designed to withstand even prolonged assaults. <\/p>\n\n
Torre Borraco was also equipped with three barbicans placed to protect the murder holes, through which attempts were made to repel attacks by pouring flammable or boiling liquids and stones. <\/p>\n\n
